Unclaimed Money - Are You Missing Money?
You must have seen many advertisements, "the government is holding money. Have you ever thought that it could it be yours? Unclaimed tax money is waiting; do you know if some of it could belong to you?" It does sound like one of those frauds, but to be honest, it is quite possible. Many people are going to miss money that they never knew was missing.
There can be numerous reasons for this. But one of the most prominent reasons is, the given details of some one who has passed away are ignored or went unnoticed.
It happened with my family. I found that the state of which I am resident had a website with a database of missing money. Nothing of course, but just out of fun, I put in my name. Then I started putting the names of my family members, and to my surprise, my great grandmother's name popped up.
Sadly, she had passed away a few months before, but apparently, there was missing money out there with her name on it. Soon after this I got the information that my great grandmother had put down a deposit for her electric service several years ago.
It appears that after her affairs were put in order, the details of this deposit were not taken care of. I immediately informed my grandfather about this deposit which was left un-claimed. And subsequently the money was claimed.
The amount was small but it was her money and hence it obviously should have passed on to her family after her death.
You also may have yours or your forefathers' missing money out there, and you may not even know it. Quite possible that you may have been named as nominee in someone's will, and were never informed. Most often, this happens when you cannot be traced.
You don't need to get over excited to see your name appearing on the official website, because the money missing is mostly a small amount. But the fact is that the money is yours. So, go ahead and take the appropriate steps to claim it.
Another reason for missing money is, it circulating around in the form of un-claimed tax refunds. The tax refund go un-claimed because as simple reason as not providing changed address. Believe it or not, some people forget to put in a change of address, and their tax refund checks are returned to the government.
Same like my great grand mother; you may have paid a deposit to avail certain utility, and forgot to collect it when you ceased to avail the same service. You may have also forgotten about an old savings account or checking account and the balance money remained unclaimed.
These days there are many resources available which help you to search if you are owed some missing money. Most of these services should be free of cost. In most cases, your state should have a searchable database online.
If someone sends you an email saying you are due some money, and then ask you to pay them for the information, ignore it. That is most likely to be a fraudulent mail. You always can find your missing money on your own.
